With a guitar fashioned from a cigar box, Mike Snowden will take his blues-inspired one-of-a-kind solo act to the stage in Atlantic Station. Snowden will perform as the opening act at the Friday Night Live concert in Atlantic Station’s Central Park.
The performance marks a dramatic shift from Snowden’s early days in the music business. Once a self-proclaimed “metal-head,” he played bass in a band called Band De Soleil that opened for the Dave Matthews Band and had its own record deal. But, for Snowden, “it started to feel like a job.”
After five years doing 200 to 250 shows per year, he put down his bass guitar and walked away.
“It was time for a break,” he says. “So, I ended up taking a six to seven year break from music and decided I couldn’t live without it.”
In the meantime, Mike dedicated his time to his wife Monique and daughter Madison.
“Now, Monique helps me with all my music,” says the proud husband.
When he contemplated returning to the music business, Snowden was inspired by the hand-made, three-stringed cigar box guitars made with real cigar boxes bought at cigar stores. “They were the coolest things to me when I found out about them,” he admits.
The unique guitars give Snowden’s music a southern feel that he compares to the Georgia Satellites from the ‘80s.
So far, Snowden has taken the do-it-yourself approach, making all his guitars himself. In addition to playing, he sells the instruments he makes in his Marietta shop. He is a self-recording artist who gets assistance from recording engineers such as Tom Tapley, who was introduced to him by their daughters.
“It’s so much easier doing everything on your own,” he says. “I can just pick up and go as I please.”
Those wanting to hear his music can find it on iTunes or CD Baby. Since his music is available online, Snowden attracts an international fan-base. The “bluesy-rock” appeals to the older crowd; however, he still catches young ears admiring his tunes.
With the completion of his fourth record at the end of this month, Snowden is ready to journey through Europe this summer and experience the international love for music. In the meantime, be sure to check out his act this Friday at 7 p.m.
